LAUNCH PAD: Our Mission Statement

We serve as a Launch Pad for the discriminating, active outdoor athlete and adventurer.

We promote a healthy, responsible and action oriented lifestyle. We actively support and contribute positively to our communities, both locally and regionally.

We empower our people to push themselves further and move themselves farther in the wilderness by giving them the knowledge, confidence in their equipment, confidence in themselves, and support they need to focus on the challenge at hand.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

James Whitesides James is the epitome of the uBRDO ideal: get out! Lost without his bike, sad without snow, and happiest when muddy he always comes to the outdoors fired up. "Now that I have found a shop where we actually only sell the stuff we believe in I am really excited" says James, "we are the store I have always wanted to work for". Whether wrenching or selling bikinis count on James' over analyzation of all things bike and outdoor to guide you in the right direction.

Besides working for uBRDO James rides with the house team during the cross, commuting and mountain bike seasons (read all year). A former roadie he has made the commitment to racing on dirt. His other sports are randonee racing, back-country ski touring and rock throwing (you have no idea how hard it is). Always looking for another way to spend his paychecks he is more than enthused that paddle boards have made it into the discussion. Come by the shop to talk bikes, toys, or comparative politics (seriously he can do that) with James or make it out to the Indie Series, Seattle Cyclocross, or any of our shop events for a chance to meet him!!

James Whitesides - uBRDO Mechanic, Team Member and all around good guy

Nick Barile (aka the Milk Scientist). I have known Nick for many years and am excited to get him into the shop! His experience is born from many years of racing bikes on the road, the dirt, and the track, as well as teaching snowboarding, and living life in a frat (he is well rounded). He has extensive knowledge of bikes and the same problems the rest of us have owning too many and still wanting more. Nick is a team player and great at explaining the nuances of bikes and parts to people new to the bike world.

Megan Richardson (aka: Mitch, Tex, or my sister) has also been around a lot (thank goodness!) helping on the sales floor and also on the business side of things (she is a human calculator. seriously. test her when you come in it's crazy). It is rare for us to ever see her in one place for long and we're doing everything we can to get her to stick around! She has spent the past year plus traveling literally around the world: a list that looks something like Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Croatia, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway, Tanzania, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador... (and that's just this last trip... and I know I forgot something in there too...). Needless to say she is an amazing resource for information on traveling ultra-light, traveling solo, getting out and staying out!

uBRDO POINTLESS FACTS & QUESTIONABLE OPINIONS

Our staff has spent more nights more than 200 miles from civilization than most people have spent sleeping in a bed outside of their own home.

WORD ON THE STREET

We have been getting a lot of great feedback since we have opened this little shop and are thrilled by the kind words! We have a long way to go to be the shop we want to be, but it looks like you like what we're doing and the direction we're headed!

THE STORY BEHIND uBRDO

U brdo is Croatian for "in the hills, or mountains". For generations my family has tended sheep in the hills of Dalmatia, spending the summer months 'at ubrdo'... only recently did we learn that ubrdo isn't the name of the place they went... but just meant they were 'going out'.
Perfect.

OUR LITTLE CORNER OF THE MARKET

We've been asked a lot lately about who our niche market is and it's a tricky question. We know we can't be everything to everybody (there are enough shops failing at that already), but let's face it, we want to serve a pretty diverse group of people; people like us. We are cyclists, but this isn't just another bike shop. We ride on the road and on the dirt, we run, we climb and hike and paddle and ski (and trying not to think about paragliding!)... heck if we get to be outside we'll do it!

We strongly believe in human powered pursuits. We believe that you can do anything you set your mind too. We believe in challenging ourselves wether it's pushing the limits of endurance over several hours in a local race or bigger projects like cycling the Western Hemisphere, paddling across the Northern tier of Canada, or circumnavigating the pacific states by foot and pedal (all things on our list!).. We hold firmly to the mantra: "Get Yourself There".

We are serving those people who believe in human powered sports and lifestyle. We want to help people push themselves a little further, wether it's pedaling across Mongolia or using a bike for their errands (the logistics of doing this year-round can be a little challenging in the Northwest!). If you have lofty goals or put that extra effort to live the life less common, we want to provide you with the equipment you need to succeed.
